Interview with David Ferriz
Hi David, please introduce yourself and tell us about your background in the games industry:

My name is David Ferriz and I am the director and founder of DevilishGames. My specialty is creating video game graphics. Devilish is a small company... this has forced me to learn other parts of the business like administration, production, game design and programming.

I had my start in the industry in 1998 founding "DevilishGames" with my brother Fran Ferriz with the objective of creating original games with personality, so that they appeal to everybody. At this moment the group combines the production of our own games with other independent (freelance) projects.

What inspired your latest game (Sonoro TV), and why did you decide to make it?

The purpose of "Sonoro TV" was to create an original game in all areas (gameplay, graphics, sound, etc.).

Many people compare "Sonoro" with games from Nintendo DS. The "paint controls" are not at all based on Nintendo DS games. The development of "Sonoro TV" began in 2004...but we have taken a lot of time to finish and polish the game and because of that, there are now many games with the same controls.

The Sonoro TV game type can be compared with games like Lemmings.

How did you come up with those unique game controls?

We wanted to maintain the strategy of Lemmings but we wanted something more dynamic. There are many different ways to play each level and each level is unique so you will never have the feeling that you already played a certain level before.

Using both, keyboard and mouse is a problem for most casual players, but we have done everything possible to keep the controls as pleasant as possible.

How long did it take to develop the game? Any big problems you encountered during development?

We created the first demo version in 2004 for a festival organized by ArtFutura and PlayStation in Barcelona (Spain). We received the prizes for Best game concept and the Special mention by the jury.

The project was then paused during 2 years because we needed financing and so we started creating a few games for mobile phones and advergames for the internet to cover the development costs of Sonoro TV.

Thanks to the success of those projects, we’ve been able to spend the last few months finalizing the development of Sonoro TV and releasing it to the public.

What’s your favorite casual game at this time?

I don’t spend a lot of time playing games but my favorite is our previous released game Nuts & Scrap (hehehehe...). No really, I love other Spanish games too like The Cursed Wheel, Fairy Match, Panic BCN, BreakQuest... and Dylo´s Adventure.

Name three things most players don't know about DevilishGames.

- We are Spanish.

- Most of our games are coded by artists and not programmers.

- From 1998 till now, we’ve been involved in the development of more than 30 games for mobile phones, shareware, advergames, educative games and more...

What kind of game are you planning to create next?

I have thought of 2 new casual games. One is called Popochi and will soon be released. The other one doesn’t have a name yet but it will be a puzzle game with casual aspects but with innovative controls.

We are also working on some side-projects for clients.

How do you see the future of casual games?

I’m still waiting for innovating games... I hate to see 10 versions of the same game on game portals. I think that the casual game market needs more innovation in the future or players may become bored.

Thank you for your time & good luck in the future!

Thanks to you and your readers... and don´t forget to buy "Sonoro TV"
